History of St. Francis

In 1914, the Order of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration founded a hospital in Beech Grove, Ind. With just 75 patient beds, the hospital was founded on the belief that human needs should be met in a holistic manner—a philosophy that continues to guide the development and operation today of St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers.

As one of the largest health care systems in Indiana, St. Francis operates three main facilities in Beech Grove, Indianapolis and Mooresville. Additional outpatient facilities are located in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

St. Francis is part of a network of 13 growing hospital campuses in Indiana and Illinois owned and operated by the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services, Inc.

With the latest medical advances and state-of-the-art facilities, St. Francis continues to be a leader in local health services. St. Francis is the only teaching hospital in Indiana to receive the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ three years in a row and is ranked among the top 5 percent of all hospitals in the country for overall clinical performance.
