Marty Ernsting Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship Fund

As we celebrate the graduation of the first Marty Ernsting Scholarship recipient, Pamela Opwanya, on May 8, 2010, we announce the second scholarship process.

The Marty Ernsting Undergraduate Memorial Nursing Scholarship has been established by her family and friends to honor her legacy as a successful nurse, colleague and friend.  Marty had several careers before settling on nursing as a calling and her final career choice.  More than anything she wanted to provide care and comfort to others.

Marty served as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers for many years.  She was best described as a “people person” with a strong will.  Physicians held her in high regard and respected her competency and decision-making abilities.  Nursing colleagues praised her clinical skills and her professionalism.  Marty embodied the spirit of nursing as she provided compassionate care to her patients and their families.

As the scholarship provides funding to assist other aspiring nurses in the pursuit of their degrees, and as they embrace the call to provide comfort, caring, and healing as Marty did, the scholarship endowment will make it possible for her spirit to continue.

The family of Marty Ernsting expresses appreciation to the many loved ones, friends and co-workers who made memorial contributions in Marty’s name.  They have made it possible to establish this scholarship fund honoring Marty’s memory and her special care of patients.

This year, in its second year, the Marty Ernsting Undergraduate Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund invites applications by the deadline of June 21, 2010.

Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be employees of St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers and enrolled in an accredited college or university undergraduate nursing program.
  • Selection will be based on financial need, maturity, and candidates having the character and qualities that lead to excellence in patient care.
  • Candidates must be non-traditional-aged students.
  • Prior to selection, there will be a personal interview process.

Candidates will need to provide two letters of recommendation, proof of college/university undergraduate enrollment, and a one-page narrative describing why they should be awarded the scholarship.
