Care for the Dying

At. St. Francis, the task of medicine is to care even when it cannot cure. With the end-of-life experience, physicians, patients and family members are challenged to evaluate the use of healing technology.  Reflection on the patient's wishes, the proposed outcomes of treatment and on the innate premise that human life is sacred in all its dimensions, helps to formulate every unique, individual decision.

In this sense, a holistic approach can lead to the choice of comfort and care and the elimination of pain.  The patient at the end-of-life can maintain dignity in a caring environment that assures emotional and spiritual care, and one which continues after death to provide bereavement services to every member of the family.

End-of-Life Services and Programs include:

  • Palliative Care focuses on compassionate, interdisciplinary patient care in meeting a patient's physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
  • Memories to Hold provides resources and emotional and spiritual support to families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death.
  • Hospice Services provide compassionate care to those with limited life expectancies, emphasizing quality of life and dignity through the end of life experience.

Mission Moment:

The St. Francis Healthcare Foundation is currently focusing on “The Bridge Campaign: Caring beyond Curing” to raise the funds needed to help build a free-standing Hospice House that will connect patients and their loved ones to much needed hospice and respite care.  This project will fill the gap for southside patients who seek inpatient end-of-life medical and spiritual care during their transition.

Located on the Indianapolis Campus of St. Francis Hospital, this home-like setting will be dedicated to providing compassionate care for patients, their families and their loved ones during the end of life process.  Hospice House will serve to facilitate the interdisciplinary mission in accordance with our Franciscan values, supporting a holisitc approach to the care of mind, body and spirit at the end of life.
