Location
Indianapolis is located within close proximity to four major metropolitan areas, including the cities of Louisville, Cincinnati, St. Louis and Chicago, as indicated on the map below.
In Indiana, the ratio of residents to physicians is rather low–between 180 and 200 physicians for every 100,000 Hoosiers. According to the American Medical Association, the malpractice climate in Indiana is rated “currently OK,” the highest respectable rating offered by the AMA. Indiana is the only state bordered by three states whose malpractice climates are deemed “in crisis”– Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio. So, it's not surprising that residents of those bordering states often choose to practice medicine in Indiana.

Cost of Living and Housing Market
Indiana has the 12th-lowest cost of living rate in the nation. The Indianapolis housing market is competitive and flourishing. In a 2006 survey released by Wells Fargo and the National Association of Home Builders, Indianapolis was ranked the most affordable major housing market in the nation for six straight quarters. In fact, 86 percent of homes on the market were affordable to families earning the city's median income, compared to the national average of 40 percent. The average purchase price of a new or existing single-family home in Indianapolis is $126,350.
