Electives For Medical Students

Interested in participating in an elective at St. Francis? The hospital offers several electives including:

Emergency Medicine Clerkship

  • Third and fourth-year students
  • Available year-round
  • Features a broad spectrum of medical, surgical and pediatric emergencies.
  • Special emphasis on toxicology, pre-hospital care, environmental emergencies, resuscitation and disaster management.

Family Medicine

  • Third and fourth-year students
  • Available year-round
  • Provides an experience similar to an internship under direct supervision by a resident but without the pressures of a first-year resident.
  • Direct patient care experience in the Family Practice Center and the hospital.
  • Will include morning staffing and teaching rounds
  • At least two nights on-call.

Gastroenterology

  • Fourth-year students
  • Available year-round 
  • Provides experience evaluating and managing inpatient hospital, outpatient gastroenterology and hepatology patients.
  • Experience in hospital and office settings.

Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition

  • Fourth-year students
  • Available year-round
  • Provides basic understanding of physiologic concepts of gastrointestinal disease.
  • Special interest in nutritional status of patients.

Orthopedics

  • Fourth-year students
  • Available year-round
  • Provides experience in basic diagnosis and interpretation of orthopedic cases.
  • Observe and assist in closed reduction, treatment of fractures and surgery procedures
  • Exposure to emergency cases and X-ray interpretations

Clinical Hematology/Oncology

  • Fourth-year students
  • Available year-round
  • Provides training in adult hematology/oncology
  • Emphasis on hematologic malignancies
  • Includes inpatient hospital rounds, office consultations and follow-ups.
